COG - LINUX-CORE: Optimized EC2 Base AMI

launch

COG Linux Core is a Debian-based Amazon Machine Image (AMI) built and maintained by Cloud Ops Group. It delivers a streamlined, security-focused Linux environment with the latest kernel and essential system utilities - all tuned for optimal performance on AWS EC2 instances.

What Is Included

  • Debian-based Linux OS with the latest stable kernel optimized for EC2
  • Ruby runtime pre-installed and configured for application development
  • Python runtime pre-installed for scripting, automation, and data workloads
  • Core system utilities selected for minimal footprint and fast boot times
  • Regular security and performance updates delivered on an ongoing basis

Who This Is For

COG Linux Core is designed for DevOps engineers, platform teams, and developers who need a reliable, pre-configured base image to build upon. Common use cases include:

  • Web application hosting - Deploy Ruby on Rails or Python-based web applications on a lean, optimized OS layer
  • CI/CD build agents - Use as a base image for continuous integration pipelines that require Ruby and Python toolchains
  • Development and staging environments - Spin up consistent, repeatable environments that mirror production configurations
  • Lightweight compute workloads - Run scripts, cron jobs, or microservices on a minimal, fast-booting image

AWS Integration

COG Linux Core is built specifically for the AWS EC2 environment. The image is designed to work seamlessly with core AWS services including:

  • Amazon EC2 - Launch directly from the AWS Marketplace with standard EC2 workflows
  • Amazon EBS - Supports EBS-backed storage for persistent data
  • AWS Systems Manager (SSM) - Compatible with SSM Agent for remote management
  • Amazon CloudWatch - Supports CloudWatch Agent installation for monitoring and log collection

Getting Started

  1. Subscribe to COG Linux Core from the AWS Marketplace listing
  2. Launch an EC2 instance using the COG Linux Core AMI ( x86_64 )
  3. Use SSH to connect to the public IP address with the ec2-user account.
  4. Begin deploying your applications on a clean, optimized base

Why Choose COG Linux Core

Unlike generic community AMIs, COG Linux Core is purpose-built for EC2 with ongoing maintenance from Cloud Ops Group. You get a consistent, tested base image with pre-installed development runtimes - saving you the time of building and hardening your own image from scratch. Regular updates mean you spend less time on OS maintenance and more time on your applications.

Requirements and Limitations

  • Domain registration and DNS configuration are not included
  • Email delivery service (e.g., Amazon SES) must be configured separately
  • Managed backups are the customer's responsibility (consider AWS Backup or snapshots)
  • SSL/TLS is not configured by default. It's recommended to place instance behind load balancer or CloudFront.

Security and Maintenance

Cloud Ops Group maintains this product with a focus on security and reliability. The image receives regular updates that include:

  • Kernel patches and security fixes.
  • Package updates for included runtimes.
  • System utility updates for stability and performance.

The image is built with a minimal package set to reduce the attack surface compared to full-featured desktop distributions.
